In the autumn season, most people “winterize” their flowerbeds, garden areas and shrubs for the year, but many overlook the fact that trees are part of the landscaping, as well. Trees are no different, as they need maintenance, nutrition, and disease prevention on a regular basis.
Ironwood Earthcare suggests that any property owner in the Denver Metro area and the Front Range of Colorado, should read these basic winter tree care tips to ensure healthy trees when spring arrives.
Do You Have Young Trees?
If so, it’s very important to protect them from the elements until they are large enough to handle the extremes. Use a tarp or burlap to cover and protect them. Be sure to trap as much of the heat from the ground as possible by extending your covering out away from the tree and fastening it down to prevent cold air from seeping in. Try to not pull it too tight over the young branches so they don’t break.
As they get older, but still aren’t mature, you can use mulch around them as an added layer of protection. Don’t place the mulch right up against the base of the tree but be sure to spread it out about two feet in each direction and about 4 inches thick.
Trimming and Pruning
The main reason that winter is the best time for trimming and pruning is that the trees are dormant. Usually, the leaves are gone and it’s easier to see and have access to the branches in order to determine what needs to be done to ensure the health of the tree. Dead, diseased pieces and broken branches need to be eliminated in order for the tree to live as long as possible.
Trees are an investment in your property. The statistics vary, but it’s a proven fact that mature trees increase the property value of homes, especially in higher-income neighborhoods. This is due to the fact that they add aesthetic value, increase privacy, thus ensuring a higher curb appeal. Protect your investment.
Ironwood Earthcare recognizes that many property owners don’t know exactly what to look for and how to do this specialized task. This is where our 20 years of expertise allows us to shine, and you will be happy with the results when spring takes its’ turn to show off.
Preventing the Spread of Disease
During the warmer seasons of spring and summer, diseases spread more easily, so it makes sense to address any problems during the colder months. If you suspect that your tree is sick, there are many websites that are specific to the Denver Metro and Front Range area that can assist you to determine what particular issue that your tree has. However, treating it yourself might not be the right thing to do in case you diagnose incorrectly, or if you might not understand all of the specifics of the treatment method. At Ironwood Earthcare, we are experts on tree care and health, and we know how to treat and protect your tree before it’s too late to save it.
Snow and Ice Related Issues
Storms can wreak havoc on trees during any season. Branches and sometimes even whole trees are damaged. However, winter snow and ice buildup become extremely burdensome on tree branches even if there has not been a severe weather event. Keep an eye on your trees to make sure they are not suffering due to the weight on their branches. Also, do not use Rock Salt close to your trees, as it penetrates the soil and causes issues with the health of the tree. If you need to make your walkways safer, but trees are close – stick with brands of product that are safer to use next to your trees.
